Vignobles et Découvertes: a brand of Atout France, the institutional tourism network
First of all, let's take a look at what a Destination Vignobles & Découvertes is?
Under the authority of the French Ministry of Agriculture and Tourism, the Vignobles et Découvertes brand includes 74 Destinations throughout France. Attribution is the responsibility of Atout Terroir, at regional level, and Atout Francetwo regional agencies promoting tourism development and economic attractiveness. The Vignobles & Découvertes label was launched in 2009 to promote the wine, culture and gastronomy sector. To avoid using the word "territory", the organization prefers to highlight sectorized "Destinations". It's an exceptional showcase that functions as a tourist guide for all those who travel and visit France. In short, it rewards an establishment (wineries, restaurants, museums, exceptional sites, hotels and gîtes) offering an engaging range of tourism products: accommodation, catering, winery visits and tastings, events, etc. In all, 8704 establishments nationwide have been awarded the label.
Vignobles et Découvertes : Destination Thau in the Mediterranean, between vineyards and shellfish
Every year, the Occitanie region welcomes 2.2 million tourists, 55% of whom come from all over France and 45% from abroad, according to figures from Atout Terroir. According to studies carried out by the agency Ad'Occthe local economic development agency, we are France's leading wine-growing region, in terms of surface area (263,000 hectares) and production volume (14.8 million hectolitres). The vineyards of the Occitanie region account for 1/3 of French production and 5% of world production. There are approximately 65,000 farms in our region (Languedoc & Roussillon). The region alone boasts 23 Destinations Vignobles & Découvertes, 7 of which are in the Hérault department alone.
In the Thau Archipelago, commonly known as Destination Thau in the Mediterranean, stretching from Vic-la-Gardiole to Pézenas, via Agde and Sète, 71 establishments are part of the label. And it's not just vineyards that surround the lagoon: another industry is particularly well represented in this Destination: shellfish farming (seafood, oysters and shellfish). Just a few more figures to illustrate the vital importance of this sector: every year, 7,000 tonnes of oysters and 4,300 tonnes of mussels are consumed locally. And what better way to accompany our delicious shellfish? A good glass of white wine, like Muscat de Frontignan or Picpoul de Pinet, two undisputed emblems of the Hérault vineyards and the Mediterranean Destination Thau. This marriage of white wine and shellfish has been consumed for many years and has become an indissociable symbol of the terroir, so much so that the concept of " merroir "(highlighting the products of the sea and land). This is how our Destination's main events were born: Vinocapthe biggest summer wine fair, the Estivales de Thausummer gatherings in towns around the lake, the Oursinades and its seafood tastings, etc.
